Back to a spot we have pounded out over the years, but every now and then, we get a keeper.
Boy what weather we have had, but it is supposed to end by this weekend...

Good deeds and Silver

Well, a little after noon on Tuesday, we were in Cicero, NY to try to recover a lost white gold wedding band with some rocks on it. it took about 20 minutes of searching, but the ring was recovered. I found it near the cobblestone walkway in the ladie's back yard. The large spike nails that held the heavy black edge liner down made if hard to search near the walkway, but luckily the ring landed between the spikes. I should have gotten more pics, but oh well...My good deed had been done...

The rest of the day was spent back home in a park we have pounded over the last 3 years, just to see what might pop up... Had the SENS turned up to 27 and let it rip...I was not disappointed...

Civil War relics in New York???

well I finally did it.  I found a Civil War Relic in an Upstate NY Park...
I was completely shocked when I pulled this beauty from the ground.  It is in excellent shape with almost full guilt still on it.
B2260...Federal infantry button, eagle with "I", "SCHUYLER H & G / N YORK." dm, two part convex hat or sleeve size, (16mm)
Button depicts eagle facing right with "I" in the shield, generally for infantry officers. Backmark: "SCHUYLER H & G / N YORK." dm inner ring of dots partly obscured by shank well. Scovill produced ca 1860, for small buttons only, (Schuyler.230.Small). Two part convex button, hat or sleeve size.
These go for about $15 on eBay in this condition.

Next popped out a 1899 barber Quarter in not too bad condition... A little worn, but a keeper.

The funny thing is I dug plenty of pennies today, but NONE was a Wheatie...Hmmm.

3 Hunts at the end of September

Was almost 3 months with no hunting this summer/fall. It was either too humid/hot, or too dry to hunt. I did manage to get out for 3 hunts once my buddy Kevin got back in town. Hit wooded areas around the city and managed to find these goodies...

From top left... A Menter Clothing token from the late 1800s to early 1900s. A Lindon Johnson Presidential token (Lindon Johnson circa 1965). A Joyland Arcade token (worth about $5). A 1850 (Upper) Canadian Half-Penny token (worth about $3). A 1941 Washington Quarter. A 193? Buffalo Nickel. 6 Wheats.

I am still ALIVE

Have not been out a lot in the last 3 months or so, but I have been out. Just not a lot to write home about.
I did find one of my oldest coins this past weekend. A 1850 Canadian (upper) Half-Penny. It was holed and about 5 inches deep. Read 12-45 on the e-Trac. I also found a Stainless Steel Class ring from Marcellus HS 1982. I am trying to locate the owner of this ring.

Breaking in a new e-Trac

My friend Tony got a new to him used e-Trac and we hit the woods today to break it in proper. I fealt naked without my utility belt. I was missing my pinpointer, finds pouch, small shovels, magnifyer, and my cleaning brushes. I had to do the old scoop dirt in the hand and run over coil procedure to find my targets...uuugghh. I managed to find a 1895 Barber Dime, 1886 Indian Head, and 1917 and 1941 wheat cents. Tony also found 1 Indian Head in the 1800s, so not a bad first real hunt for him.

Hunting in the Heat

Did not find any Silver tonight, but did hit a 1974 Half Dollar and 4 1940s wheats. I also got a Naval button. No clue on the age.The back is wasted anyways. $3.47 in clad, counting the half dollar. Not too bad for 3 hours of hunting in a park I have hit 8 times over the last 5 years.

Upon further review, I believe the button to be of British origin.  Still trying to narrow down the year of manufacture.

3 Silvers and Something Unexpected...

Went to my trusty Wood's Field today and hunted for about 4 hours. This place still gives up the goods after being hit since 2005 by me. Today I recovered a 1946 Washington Quarter, 1941 Mercury Dime, a Sterling St. Joseph medalion, 1924, 36, 3x44, 51, 57 Wheats, and a 1961 Canadian cent. The surprise was the Menter Clothing Token good for $1 in credit when you bought $10 in goods. I included a link to some info on this token.

Too Much Monkey Business - Chuck Berry

No Mo Monkey Bidness

My friend Keven was playing this old Chuck Barry song on the radio and it stuck in my head all dang day...We headed out of town and into the sticks, but found all the woods out there POSTED...For the love of Pete folks...I know that some of them woods are public property! We ended up back just outside the city in a park we have hit a number of times before...We were joking that if we stopped finding silver that all we needed to do was pack everything back in the car, drive down the road a bit and come back in 10 minutes and we would find more. Seems like at least 2 pop out every time we have been there. I found 4 silvers today. A 1948 Washington Quarter, 1926 and 1941 Mercury Dimes, a 1949 Silver Canadian Dime, and a no date Buffalo nickel. Also found $1.91 in clad.

Oswego County Road Trip

Hit two parks today... Both along the river. First park produced the 2 Mercs and most of the clad. As you can see, the fertilizer was not kind to the coins. The second park produced a LOT of trash, a few clad coins, then the show stopper... Have no idea what this bullet is... If anyone can help, email me at: diggerodirt@gmail.com The large copper disk, I thought was an old coin at first, but now I think it was just a knockout. Have no idea on the buckle either.

Saturday in a Pounded Park

My buddy and I have pounded this park we went to today to death last year. Not much to find here anymore...All day hunting, and here was my take...At least I got a 1800s IH.

Another First For Me

All my friends have found at least one, and since 2005, this is my first Large Cent...It is also my oldest coin to date... A 1817 13 Star Matron Head Cent. The nick in it was not from my diggers...She is a beauty for 200 years old!!!

3 Silver Sunday

Went to a wooded area near a golf course...Found the 1902 Barber dime there but little else. My Buddy Kevin found a SLQ, Washington Quarter and a Mercury Dime. We broke for dinner, then hit another park we have hunted a few times...The place always produces so far...I found 2 Mercury Dimes in one hole...1920 and 1940. I also found a few Wheats, and about $2.50 in clad (Not shown)...The large medalion was gold plated at one time, but it is mostly all gone...The smaller medalion is aluminum, or tin...NOT Silver. Short park hunt today

Not much top brag about today...At least for me...My buddy Kevin found a 40% JFK Half. I found 1936, 45, and 56 wheats, and a 1923 Buffalo. Why do the newer wheats always look worse than the older ones???

Another Shallow "V" Nickel

Back to the same forest hills as I fond the Shield and other "V" Nickel, and I get another one...1903 and not in best shape...Only about an inch deep on the side of the trail. The guys who are cherry picking this place...I thank you for leaving the old nickels for me...I like 1800s and early 1900s coins...

Valley Hunting is Gorges

Went back to the same woods as the other day...Got there about 1PM, and hunted till dark...Nothing all day long but cartridge cases, shotgun shells, and can lids... Then just before dark, I headed down by the creek, and hit back to back nickel signals less than 2 inches each...Dug (scraped the surface) for the first one and pulled a 1869 Shield Nickel in decent shape. Next came the 1889 V Nickel, also in great shape. The ring was found on top of the tallest hill in the area...It is Sterling, but most of the stones are missing and are glass. The bottle I just thought was neat. This area has history back to the late 1600s. It is brutal hunting, and a major workout, but persistence pays off... HH,
